Traffic Delays Expected on U.S. 1 During Widening Project in Kennett Square
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has signaled the continuation of a significant roadwork project on U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike), forecasting traffic disruptions in Chester County. The $10.4 million initiative aims to widen and enhance a 1.3-mile stretch of the roadway, from the Kennett Oxford Bypass to Greenwood Road, traversing Kennett and East Marlborough townships.
Starting Tuesday, May 14, through Monday, June 3, drivers navigating northbound on U.S. 1 between Greenwood Road and Orchard Avenue should anticipate a lane closure from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekdays. With the likelihood of backups and delays, motorists are advised to budget extra time for their commutes through this corridor. The execution of these activities hinges on conducive weather conditions.
The undertaking is designed to significantly improve traffic flow and safety along this busy section of U.S. 1. Plans include milling and overlaying the existing pavement, adding a third lane in select segments in both directions, and reconfiguring shoulders and right turn lanes to support the expanded roadway. Additionally, pedestrian accessibility will be bolstered through the construction of sidewalks on the north side of U.S. 1, extending from Schoolhouse Road to the entrance of the Longwood Village Shopping Center.
In a move to streamline traffic movements and enhance safety, the project will also eliminate the option to turn left from Orchard Avenue onto U.S. 1. Infrastructure upgrades are not limited to the roadway itself; two new Dynamic Message Signs and improvements to five signalized intersections within the affected area are part of the comprehensive plan.
Allan Myers, LP, headquartered in Worcester, Montgomery County, has been tapped as the general contractor for this federally funded project. With an eye toward completion in late 2025, these improvements represent a long-term investment in the region’s transportation infrastructure.
